Pure guessing here. External ram and MMU are board specific. Probably eMMC needs special care in configs. And serial port which suppose to be integrated in soc. It's probably the bare minimum for any OS.
Another question how to upload that new firmware to your dev. It could be bootlocked, etc. I didn't have much exp and success with phones. Sbc like OrangePi and Raspberry Pi are much more straight forward. Also, I don't know if nexus phones have special connectors to communicate with serial port or jtag.
