Hi, I recently experimented a bit with Excel using COM (Excel 8 aka Excel97 and PHP 4.3 / 4.4-dev on WIN98SE).
It is quite hairy, especially because the PHP COM implementation does not yet implement all the needed VARIANT subtypes (most notably multi dimensional safe arrays), so a lot of objects are not yet reachable. If writing true XLS files is essential though, one can say it is possible.
