Be polite = do not use profane/blasphemous language. Simple courtesy.

I must be missing something here, but what IS all this chatter about
politeness, blaphemy and profanity all about pray tell and what has it got
to do with php? If someone is posting dirty ditties can they send again
because I missed them completely.

Jill's reply...

I think I'm missing the same thing actually. I'm Jill Ramonsky, and after I
posted the following (which, incidently, was my very FIRST EVER post to this
list) Per Lundberg's reply appeared (which, incidently was very useful).
However, in his reply, he also said "so you may email me politely (i.e.
without using profane/blasphemous language) if you have any other
questions", which perplexed me utterly, because of course, I haven't done
anything! I'm just a newcomer to this list who posed the following question:

> Hi guys,
>

support
> PHP.

That should clarify your "what has it got to do with php?" question. As to
"If someone is posting dirty ditties can they send them again?", what I sent
is reproduced above.

It has been suggested that perhaps Per Lundberg found the phrase "How the
hell" objectionable, but if so he has not clarified this. My overwhelming
reaction is still one of amazement, because, you see, I do actually consider
myself a very polite person and wouldn't dream of uttering obscenities in a
public mailing list, so I'm feeling a bit persecuted here. I'm also
wondering if I should leave the list, as it seems an awfully sensitive
place, and the probability of someone getting upset over perfectly innocent
posts is a bit offputting. (In fact, it feels sort of like King Arthur's
bewilderment over the reaction of the Knights who say Ni to his use of the
word "it").

For myself, I promise not to take offense at anything unless I perceive a
deliberate personal attack. I'm also pretty good at PHP too, if anyone would
like to talk about that.

Jill

It seams that there is some overreaction with the use of a more common/street/american expression in english... mayhappen they would prefer that one talked everything in our natural languages and thrus forfeit the usefullness of the mailing list itself...

I'm not a list administrator or moderator, but if i was, this thread would be killed right there. The questions arrised where perfectly legit (they where regarding php and windows), so all this trafic regarding the wordings of the questions is ENTIRELLY OFFTOPIC.

Hope you manage to create the server and please, don't fail to inform us of the progresses or ask more questions regarding its integration with php... at least i'm curious of the outcome...

Guys,

I think that the point was missed here.

I'm not the original poster but my reading of it was that considering what
was being undertaken might prove problematic (writing a win web-server) that
the recipient might find herself prone to utter the odd swear word or curse.
Nothing more than that.

Of course, I could be completely wrong - I was once before, but she won't
agree to the divorce!

hey, you could try with a double qote instead of single quote.
$submit = $_POST["submit"];

but with globals on,
global $submit;
will work too, ....

Hi!

I have a question that might not be directly php-related, not all aspects of
it anyway, but it has to do with things that I belive most of you have come
across and know how to do.

I would like to know the general way to go in these situations:
First thing, I'm developing a sort of forum. When a user submits a question
I want to make sure that he hasn't written some evil script, so I guess I'll
have to strip all tags. But then again, I would like him to be able to write
links to other pages in his question... But i guess that I could easily find
words that is urls, and then link them correctly automatic...

Second thing, I have an admin-system for answeing questions... Now, the
administrator of this is not a programmer what-so-ever and I don't want to
force him to write href-tags in his answers... But I would like to have some
sort of system to insert urls in the answers whitout having to show the
href-tags to the administrator. How would you do this?

I'm thinking like this

Record in ANSWER-mysql-table holding the answer:

"This is just a test and not an actual answer.
Right now I'm trying to ad a link: [A1] And one more [A2] ."

And then a LINK-table holding the links:

|extid| link | text |
  A1 www.php.net PHP-resource
  A2 www.wrox.com Good books!

which will produce the output when displaying the answer for the user;

"This is just a test and not an actual answer.
Right now I'm trying to ad a link: PHP-resource And one more Good books ."
(PHP-resource and Good books linked to the specified urls...)

Would this be the way to go?

Is there some way to get around the time limit of maximum execution time
whitout making any changes in the ini file?

I have a function that fetches a file generated by another server, that is
fetching it's data from a db. And this process will be repeated for as many
times as I've telled the function to do it... After 5 or 6 calls from the
function to the external server I reach the maximum execution time limit...

Any ideas?

Hey guys,

I am wondering how, when people go to my main site, http://splix.dyndns.org,
they get redirected to index.php.

I am used to using HTML, where the first page the user sees is index.html.
How can I do this with PHP?

Thank,
Dave
