my own fault. I had all 3 kits, jpeg, png and zlib already installed but not the devel versions. When I tried installing the latest I got all kinds of version conflicts and so backed up to earlier versions of the devel ones. It then build and it looks like I'm off to the races.

But it does. The GD libraries are included in PHP, you just need to turn them on. However, GD requires supporting libraries to be able to support certain image formats, which is clearly stated in the GD manual at http://www.boutell.com/gd/manual2.0.22.html
also disappointed with the fact that when I tried the --with-png-dir switch on the configure command it gave me errors that it couldn't find libpng when I know it was in the directory I specified.
But you didn't have the development libraries installed, remember. That's how RedHat does it. They package the development libraries for a package seperately. I don't know how I finally figured that one out. Alot of googling I guess. Hey, that's what mailing lists are for. ;-)
