Mike - you're a genius! even with your help I stumpled a tad but it was my own fault. I had all 3 kits, jpeg, png and zlib already installed but not the devel versions. When I tried installing the latest I got all kinds of version conflicts and so backed up to earlier versions of the devel ones. It then build and it looks like I'm off to the races.

thought I am brand new to php, I'd think enough people would want to use it with gd integrated that there would have been specific directions in some prominent location. I'm also pretty disappointed that it didn't build gd out-of-the-box as promised on the gd website. finally, I was also disappointed with the fact that when I tried the --with-png-dir switch on the configure command it gave me errors that it couldn't find libpng when I know it was in the directory I specified.

again, thanks for your help and putting up with my ranting. 8-)

ok, I confess, I must be stupid, but...

./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/bin/apxs --with-mysql --with-gd

generates an error that it can't find libpng. adding
--with-png-dir=/usr/lib doesn't help. but if I now remove the --with-gd
switch it builds. so how to I get png AND gd support built together?
it seems that by adding the png option it prevents gd from building and
if I remove the png option it complains it's not there!

can someone just show me a 'valid' configuration line and I'll try
that? All I'm looking for is something minimal that will use both png
and gd at the same time with apache and once I get that to work I can
try adding in other options

Okay, you need to make sure that you have all the *-devel packages installed. So you need:

libjpeg-devel
libpng-devel
libtiff-devel (if you want tiff support)

If I remember correctly, you also need zlib for png support, so:

zlib
zlib-devel

Once all of those are installed, the following should work for you:

./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/bin/apxs --with-gd --with-zlib

Good luck.
