I've just tried to install PHP 4.2.1, upgrading from 4.1.2 (confusing
numbers I know.) After successfully building and installing with no
errors, with the following config line:
        ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/local --with-gettext
--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-imap=/root/imap-2001a
--with-ftp --with-gd --with-png --with-jpeg

As I said, it builds without issue, however upon restarting Apache, I
get the following:
Syntax error on line 208 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
        Cannot load /usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so into server:
/usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so: undefined symbol: sfstderr
/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start: httpd could not be
 started
This was also an issue with PHP 4.2.0 when I tried to build with GD
support, however it appears PHP 4.2.1 does it even without GD. I
reverted to 4.1.2 because of this, however I would really like to get a
newer version going, even if it means going to 4.2.0 without GD support.
~ I'm running Slackware 8.0 with Glibc 2.1.

If anyone has anything to contribute, would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
