Try running php from the command line with the script and see what it
does. It's possible that it's sending out error messages and no
content. Also check your web server error logs (or Application and
System Event Logs on NT) and see if there are any relevant errors that
may tell you more about the problem.

I've been on this list for over 2 years and to start with probably asked
some seemingly stupid questions. Because of the help from others and
perseverance I am now pretty sharp in the platform & extensions we use php
with. This knowledge I have passed on to a lot of other users usually
off-list because they're probably too afraid of getting a reply back
something back like the one you posted.

We should be encouraging people instead of discouraging them. If you can't
help someone then please don't bother sending things like this. Perhaps
you're having a bad day?

Perhaps one of you guys could give me the solution to my problem. I have
tried
posting it before, but it seems it did not make the list that time; so here
goes:

I'm running HPUX 10.20 and installed PHP 4.06 as CGI with Netscape
Enterprise
Server 3.61. The "configure" options were as follows (provided somewhere on
the
FAQ list) :

./configure --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql
                        --enable-track-vars
                        --enable-libgcc
                        --enable-discard-path
Everything works EXCEPT that I get the the first line
of my script also printed on the screen i.e. #!/usr/local/bin/php
(The "--enable-discard-path" is supposed to take care of that, but
evidently, it does not. If I supply the "-q" option, I get an error:
"Input file not specified".

Any idea how to solve the problem?

If you don't want to be on the list, remove yourself - the instructions are
on the bottom of every posting.

Hi Marius,

If you're running your scripts via the web server you don't need the
#!/usr/local/bin/php at the start of them. This line should only be required
if you run them from the command line or cron for example so it knows the
location of the program to parse it.

HTH

Best regards,
- Paul -

This is hilarious. I haven't laughed so much in a long time. You're not
serious, are you?

The purpose of these lists is to help people; all kinds of people. If
Linux/Apache/PHP et al were as easy to install and use as they
should/could be then we wouldn't need the lists. We're not all
experienced Linux hackers. Everyone was once a newbie.

One of the reasons Linux is so popular is because of the "Linux
community". Please don't destroy it.

Well, I guess it's time to set up a cron job to send you an email
reminding you that you are a moron every ten minutes. This is the
INSTALLATION list. By its very nature, it will have people here who do
not know any better. This person may have had Red Hat 7, SuSE 7, or
Mandrake 7. The correct response would have been:

Since the Linux kernel is only on version 2.4, you must have meant
version 7 of your distribution. Which distribution is it?

This not only informs the individual asking the question, it also get
clarification so that those of us who care, and are not just insensitive
nimrods like you, the opportunity to help. I do not feel bad insulting
you. You have proven yourself to be a jerk. Not having a clue is a
cureable disease. Being like you is unfortunately terminal.

If a directory exists, but does not show up with an ls, 2 things are
possible that I can think of right now.
1) It is a hidden file. If it starts with a . , it will only show up
with a ls -a.
2) You can gove someone permission to get to the files of a directory,
but not do an ls to find out what the files are. Since there is a
directory missing, rather than the contents of the directory, this is
likely not the case. It is the execute permission on the directory that
causes this.

This is really more of a general Unix/Linux question than a PHP/DB
question. You may want to try a more general list. I would suggest the
list from your local Linux User's Group.

rg ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

It does this because it doesn't know how to handle the type of file.
So it sends it across to your browser as a generic application file.
This means that your web server has not been configured to run PHP for
.php files.

> i changed the httpd.conf file already.

Make sure that you have this line in your httpd.conf (I assume you do,
but just in case...):

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

Then restart Apache. You can usually use apacheadmin command if it's
installed:

apacheadmin reload

Otherwise you can call the startup script, probably
/etc/init.d/apache, /etc/init.d/httpd, /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache, or
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd. Include the command line option 'reload':

/etc/init.d/apache reload

HI,

I have installed Apache-1.3.20 on my Window 2000 machine. It works
fine. I have also installed PHP-4.0 on the same machine and thought
that I followed the instructions to the letter, but I cannot get the "<?
phpinfo(); ?> to display. Now, when I run the command:
c:\>php.exe -i I get the long listing of html code in the window. So,
php is running correctly. I have gone over the httpd.conf files many
times and added the lines for the CGI version of PHP, but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have been trying to upgrade my PHP installation to 4.06. I can't find an
RPM for my Mandrake 7 system, so I am compiling from source. I have
configured with this line:
./configure --with-mysql=/usr --disable-debug --enable-sysvshm --enable-tran
s-sid --with-config-file-path=/etc/php.ini --with-zlib --with-mnogosearch --
with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs

I got no errors during my configure, make or make install. However, as soon
as I restarted my apache, I got an error:

Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 74 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so into server: /usr/lib/libimap.so.4:
undefined symbol: mm_dlog

My php.ini file is copied over from php.ini-dist in the 4.06 source with the
modifications I need. I have checked it over carefully - there is NO
reference to libimap.so in this file, nor in my httpd.conf file for apache.
This problem occurred repeatedly with various ./configure lines, including
one attempt in which I explicitly disabled both imap and pear.

I was finally able to track down this problem. My first attempt to install
4.0.6, I enabled imap, since I had had it running successfully under
4.03pl1. When that failed, I rm'd the config.cache file and issued a new
configuration command. However, the make install script was continuing to
install the imap.so into my extensions directory. Furthermore, despite my
having not loaded it through my php.ini, the extension was attempting to
load. I was finally able to install successfully by deleting all extensions
from the extensions directory, deleting the 4.0.6 source directory,
reloading it from the tar, and doing a new configure, make, make install
cycle without imap.

I don't know why this happened, but in the event of installation problems, I
would advise the following:
1. Ensure your extensions directory is empty of any problematic extensions.
2. When doing a new configuration, start from a fresh source directory. Do
not reconfigure within an old directory. Removing the config.cache file
before you begin may not be sufficient.

I see lots:

Safe mode doesn't seem to be working properly for me. I've enabled safe
mode for the whole server, php scripts appear to work fine, but when a
php script attempts to write a file (in a directory owned by the same
user as the php script), php complains it can't write. For example,
using imagejpeg to export a jpeg file, results in :
    Warning: imagejpeg: unable to open
    '/home/photo-user/html/pictures/05090027.JPG'
    for writing in /home/photo-user/html/functions.inc.php on
    line 35
Using fopen to write a file gives the same result, so I believe it to be
a general permission problem.

Also, when I try to use convert (image conversion utility), located in
/usr/local/bin (I have added php_admin_value safe_mode_exec_dir
/usr/local/bin/ to the Apache config), I get a shell return value of 154
(can't find what it means). PHP should be able to execute that
file and have it converting images (writing them back to the directory
owned by the user running the php script).

The full configure :
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-imap
--enable-versioning
--enable-ftp --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-snmp=/usr/local/snmp
--with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl --enable-dbase --enable-debug --with-pear
--with-mcrypt
--with-dom --with-pcre --with-zlib-dir=/usr --with-jpeg-dir --with-gd
--enable-exif

Nevermind, must have been a local caching problem. The problem is gone
today, the only thing that has changed is that my workstation was shut
down overnight.
