Gerry, If a human being can read it, so can a spambot. New techniques might be developed all the time, but you shouldn't bet against spammers bringing themselves up to date with those techniques too.
If the user wishes to display their e-mail address on a web page, they should ensure they have good spam-filtering. You might consider using some sort of CAPTCHA image, but that isn't guaranteed to work flawlessly, and reading an e-mail address in a CAPTCHA image would be hard work.
