Forthcoming talk: ‘Emotive’ Philosophy and Analysis in Poetry: Growing up with
C.L. Stevenson
Anne Stevenson

Peterhouse Theory Group
The Parlour, Peterhouse
Monday, 21st October, 2019, 8.30 pm.

The poet Anne Stevenson is the daughter of the philosopher CL Stevenson, who
gave the first systematic development of emotivism. Anne will be talking about
her experience of growing up in New Haven and Ann Arbor as the oldest of
Charles’ three daughters, with emphasis on how much his enthusiasm for, and
home-based performances of, music and poetry contributed to her own life as a
poet. The talk will be structured around a sequence of her poems, which will be
provided on the night, but are also available in advance from the Faculty of
Philosophy.
