Dear all, It's my pleasure to announce a new, experimental event in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science under the name of The Dialectic, the first edition of which will take place 29th October, 11am-12:30pm, seminar room 2 (HPS department).
Underpinning The Dialectic is the notion that the format of a constructive dialogue (not: debate) is uniquely well-suited for the exposition and analysis of novel ideas and unconventional views on the nature of history, philosophy, science and everything in between. Each dialogue will take the form of a conversation between a Proponent (defending a particular thesis) and an Opponent (interrogating the Proponent about their thesis and, optionally, presenting their own counter-thesis). The first installment of The Dialectic will feature: Hasok Chang (proponent) & Tim Lewens (opponent) discussing the thesis: Scientific knowledge is about real objects, which are constrained creations of our minds Many thanks to Tim and Hasok for agreeing to participate in this event. Looking forward to seeing many of you there!
