Dear all,

Just a reminder that at this week's meeting of the Moral Sciences Club
on Tuesday 24th Feb, Shyane Siriwardena (Cambridge) will be giving a talk
entitled 'The Agency Theory of Causation: Unsound or Incomplete' (abstract
below). The talk will be in Newnham college's Sidgwick Hall, from 2.30-4.15
pm.

If you'd like to join us for dinner with Shyane in the evening, please
email Ali Boyle ([email protected]
<javascript:_e(%7B%7D,'cvml','[email protected]');>) by midday on Monday.

Best wishes,

Ali Boyle and Mat Simpson

The agency theory of causation, as defended by Huw Price, bills itself as
a theory that explicates the implicit use-rules for our concept of
causation. After presenting the theory as it appears in the literature, I
will demonstrate that there are a great many uses of our concept of
causation that this theory cannot accommodate. In particular, I will show
that the theory is ill-equipped to account for our use of the concept of
causation in describing token events. From this I will conclude that
defenders of the agency theory are faced with a dilemma: either hold fast
to a theory that is unsound, or else concede that said theory is severely
incomplete in a way not previously acknowledged.
