Varieties of Hylomorphism

Aristotle's hylomorphism has two distinctive elements. a) It takes there to
be entities, forms, which in entering into combination with matter result
in hylomorphically complex entities. And, on the basis of these forms, b)
it envisages an account of hylomorphically complex entities that reveals
tight interconnections between their essences, their origins, and their
functions. Science has rendered Aristotle's view untenable. I discuss two
contemporary varieties of hylomorphism. Kit Fine has developed a view that
picks up on the realist element in Aristotle but lets go a satisfactory
account of the relations between essence, origin, and function. I propose
an alternative that I call non-realist hylomorphism. This view attempts to
keep a unified account of essence, origin, and function but without
positing anything to play the role of forms.
