Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the Cambridge Women in Philosophy talk that will take
place TOMORROW (Thursday) at 11am. As usual, the events will last one hour, and
everybody - from any department or gender - is welcome to attend. I hope to see
lots of you there!

Thursday 30th May 11am to 12 (with lunch with the speaker afterwards).

Location: Seminar Room 1, HPS
ATHENE DONALD: "The Climate for Women in Philosophy: A Discussion with
Professor Dame Athene Donald, Professor of Experimental Physics and University
of Cambridge Gender Equality Champion"

Abstract: As the University's Gender Equality Champion I am trying to
understand the culture for women in different parts of the University. Locally
and nationally much attention has been paid to HE science departments (I am a
physicist), but Sheffield philosopher Jenny Saul has pointed out to me that
Philosophy has an alarming demographic pattern, with a very high 'leak' as you
move up the academic ladder. Cambridge seems to be no exception and I'm aiming
to learn more about the culture in Philosophy for women both generically and
locally. Why is it that a 50:50 split in undergraduates transforms into an
overwhelmingly male faculty? Is it inherent to the subject, as some people
imply is true in physics, or is it the way it's taught or something more
specific about the culture? I'd like to have a constructive discussion of these
issues and see if any ideas to facilitate women's progression in the future in
the department can be made.

WIP is a cross-departmental group for undergraduates, graduates and faculty
supported by the Philosophy and HPS Faculties that aims to provide a forum for
networking and celebrating the work that women philosophers are doing here at
Cambridge and elsewhere. For further details, please see our webpage:
