It was great for the price but yes, it was very underpowered for most
"real" tasks.

It's worth pointing out that the Pi3 is a completely different kettle of
fish though.

This is where I'd love to get to. Unfortunately beyond buying an Arduino I
haven't done anything more.

This is interesting. We've just bought a cheap 3D printer but the 3d
modeling side of things is a bit beyond us at the moment. The purpose for
it was to design a Pi case that did what we wanted from it, which once we'd
"perfected" we could then get professionally 3d printed. I don't know how
realistic that is though.

Personally, I think my interest in Linux as a hobby has waned a little
primarily because I just get on with using it these days - I still read
lots of Linux mags etc to see what's out there but rarely follow through on
any projects. On the other hand, I'd have a lot more interest in something
around the Pi's GPIO and/or Arduino, basic electronics, etc. A few years
ago I set myself the challenge of doing something clever with Christmas
lights using all the various bits of kit but it rarely gets any thought
until too close to Christmas to have any chance of making progress so it
gets shelved again.
