My personal advice is to go ahead and buy. This is my first ever hard drive
failure and although people get rude about Apple the consensus opinion is "hard
drives fail - always back up".

I will certainly never go back to Windows and I'm seriously considering buying
a new 27-inch iMac.

The vital thing is to have backup and the Time Machine software that's part of
the Mac OS sorts it with typical Mac efficiency. Since I write I've been
copying my stuff (docs and software as needed from the backup to my wife's
machine and it just works.
