Your point is good, Mark, and needs to be said from time to time in all lists. But this one in particular is unlikely to become just adverts simply because of the mix of people who use it.
Also, there's an enormous difference between telling people about one's services in a discussion and just advertising. As part of a conversation Toby's reference to Mythical-Beasts is relevant and interesting. But as you say, the declaration of interest is a key element which differentiates conversation from advert.
