Greetings all, I wonder if anyone can help the ladies of the Inner Wheel District 7?
The background is this: One of the ladies (my neighbour) built a basic website using Word and hosted it at Fasthosts. It worked OK but updating meant that she had to alter the page in Word and FTP it. As use of the website grew they needed a content management system so that officers and club principals could update their own sections. They commissioned a young relative to build a site using Joomla which you can see at: http://www.innerwheeldistrict7.org/ It does the job and many people have put in a lot of time learning how to manage their sections. The problem is that when they need help the young relative is not available. For example, the fact that the site has been hacked twice suggests that updates don't happen properly. I'll copy my neighbour's comments (in her email to other members) so you'll see where she's coming from. I'm not sure exactly what will help them. A total rebuild would probably be expensive - and they paid a lot for this website and have invested time and effort into learning how to use it - but is maintenance and support an option? Any thoughts, suggestions, offers, quotations, etc., would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Brian Quote:- "We need to establish: Ongoing maintenance and updating. If you could come to the meeting with possible ideas as to our next move – I think we are all agreed that we need to find another host and maintenance provider. There may be problems getting away from (name) as I believe he has the passwords etc. If anyone has any contacts or knows of a firm who could supply the service we need please come with details and if poss prices. I think it is important to emphasise that the site needs to be accessible to older and not so up to date machines and programmes, to say nothing of the users. I think if members are unable to do their own editing where they want then they will soon lose interest. The programme that we use needs to be VERY USER FRIENDLY!! The website that we have is what we need and looks good. It just needs to be more reliable and more accessible to our members. I don’t believe this should be a problem if we can find someone who is willing to help us maintain it. Carolyn has done a wonderful job in being the mainstay and you have all been incredible in sticking with it and learning. However, it is becoming a chore and this shouldn’t be. Basically what we need is someone to help us ensure that the website runs smoothly – there must be someone out there who can help!" _______________________________________________ Peterboro mailing list Peterboro@mailman.lug.org.uk https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/peterboro
