For my money, TestDisk is a software WD-40; one of those miracles that once you discover it you wonder how you managed without it.
If you are able to back up the drive before playing with it (eg dd image it) then that's always advisable. But I've put my trust into TestDisk many times in the past, and if it can see the partitions I haven't been disappointed with its recovery of them. It's one of the first tools I turn to in such situations.
