I'm in the middle of implementing a Joomla 2.5 site.  If by "auto
update" you mean without any human intervention at all, then you are
right.  You need to trigger updates manually from the administration web
UI.  Joomla will then do the rest for you.

I understand that some earlier versions did not have a scripted update
that could be run from the web UI and had to be updated manually.  I'm
not sure which version introduced the scripted update.
