.. to take on the job of getting a PLUG website up and running. I know this
has come up before and there have been abortive attempts.
There are some resources available on lug.org.uk:
http://lug.org.uk/lugmaster/newlugs
http://lug.org.uk/lugmaster/using-snm
or something could be set up separately - I know for example that Google offer
free hosting (sites.google.com).
My comments would be:
1. It should not rely on any one person, albeit that at any given time
one person may be doing most/all the work.
2. Because of (1), it should not rely on anyone's personal hosting. I'd
suggest lug.org.uk or something like Google
3. It should be easy to maintain and transfer between people.
4. Beyond points 1-3 whoever wants to do it should pretty much have free
choice about what they do and how they do it.
Also, to pre-empt what came up before: I would strongly recommend *against*
any kind of forum as it will just split traffic between the mailing list and
the forum, and it's important that anyone having a Linux question gets the
best audience possible. With forum and list, typically the more technical
users will stay on the list and new users will gravitate to the forum, which
means they won't get the best help that PLUG can offer. However, if a way to
combine the two can be agreed on then that should be OK. I would recommend
starting with just a website that tells people where me meet and how to join
the mailing list though.
Finally, although I've been around here quite a while and I'm the one who
maintains the list, I'm also currently one of the least active members of the
LUG. So don't be afraid to disagree with everything I just said, my views
carry no particular weight.
