Update:
Mint 12 ONLY works for me if I use their MATE interface.
All the others - Gnome, Gnome 2, and I tried their Cinnamon as well, get
me to the desktop, but where there should be pretty bars top and bottom
there are only grey bars with nothing on them, and they are dead. So no
menus, no ability to click etc
I am beginning to think this is a Graphics hardware problem, perhaps
related to the age of my machine! What a shame. Shall stick with MATE
for a while and see how stable it all is unless someone has a better idea!

Happy new year to everyone.
I have a problem with my Ubuntu / Mint install
My hardware is an Evesham machine:
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.21Ghz,
nVIDIA nForce 4 PCI Express mainboard
2GB DDR RAM (PC3200)(2x1Gb)
250GB SATA Hard drive with 8Mb buffer
256MB DDR ATi Radeon X800GTO PCI-Express graphics
Bought 16/12/2005 so it is a wee bit ancient - like its owner!!
Issue is this:
I have been running Ubuntu happily for perhaps 4-5 years - dual booting
with XP - and accepting all the updates and upgrades as I went along.
At the last upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 which I did a few weeks ago,
including upgrade to v3 of the Kernel, - chaos. After the
update/reboot, it got to the log-in screen, I logged in, and I got a
screen full of error messages. White text on black. Cannot do a screen
dump as machine locks up.
I re-booted into the previous kernel (v2) and all was fine
Decided there was an error in the update, so reinstalled. Standard
install, all defaults, except that I separated out my Home into another
partition.
Ran fine as a live CD, bit once I rebooted ......
Disaster! Could not get past the login screen without the screen full
of error messages again and again, and having reinstalled, i could not
fall back on v2 of the kernel.
So I installed Mint 12. Standard install, all defaults as above.
(Forgetting of course that it is based on Ubuntu! DOH!)
It ran quite happily for a few days, (and I THINK I had a problem when I
tried Banshee, and the machine locked up) So I rebooted, logged in and
got the now familiar screen full of error messages, and a locked up machine.
(At this point I gave up and used an underpowered machine on which I
have Mint11 LXDE which is fine!!)
Those of you who know me will realise that I am NOT very Linux smart! So
any answer will need to be Ed-proof!! I do not need to fix the install
to save data etc, I just really want it to work!! i am happy to
reinstall with some clever tricks if that is what is needed.
The only other issue is that my CMOS battery has died, but this has been
dead for ages now, and did not appear to have any impact on Ubuntu
kernel v2 or Windows, or Mint for a while!!
Has anyone any ideas what is happening here? If I do not reply
speedily, please do not consider me rude - just unable to reply,
probably fully until Tuesday evening.
