Hi Ed I'm far from the expert, but I've been having similar probs with both Ubuntu 11.04 & 11.10/Mint 11&12 on an old laptop with an unusual monitor. This might be entirely unrelated, but I booted the PC eventually in recovery mode, and the system liked it.
From the grub screen, just select the recovery option, and then when you see the recovery menu appear, just select "continue normal boot" (or something like that). On Ubuntu, I had to log in from the commandline and then use the "startx" command, but mint just took me straight into the graphical login screen (gdm). You might have a different prob, but just see if this works.
