You could of course use a rolling distro. Personally, I use Arch Linux (or Parabola - it's politically-free equivalent). I'm quite sure you could roll with the testing branch of Debian/Ubuntu to achieve a similar upgrade policy; thus avoiding the 'big-drop' --it's what happens when dist-upgrade breaks };->
