Boot from a live cd and move any data on the drive, that is if you can see
the drive, (it may be filesystem corruption),  to an external hdd, then do
a clean install from scratch, upgrades are ropey at best, I've done a
couple and had no problems and then had one that borked halfway through, it
has put me off doing upgrades, only thing to do is abort and do a fresh
installation. Backups are always a good idea before any upgrade, but often
overlooked.
