CentOS as a desktop distro is OK as long as you don't really want the bells
& whistles - remember this is a server based OS really; designed for
absolute stability with a conservative release cycle

I look after many systems running CentOS (both privately and in my day time
sys manager role at ParentMail in Peterborough) & can attest to it's
suitability in the server based arena. My everyday desktop machine is
running Fedora 14, this gives me up to date drivers and support for the eye
candy you crave (you may be able to use CentOS as a viable desktop but the
eye candy [and more] will be an up hill struggle, trust me) - I run dual
monitors with compiz fusion (with emerald) for the the effects & there is
nothing that I can't do that most people would do under windoze (although I
do run VirtualBox with Win7 as a Linux guest [I keep M$ in a little box that
I can delete and manipulate at will] - largely for browser compatibility
testing)

As to the difference between Fedora and CentOS, Fedora is the community led
in-development (as in leading edge) version of Red Hat's flag ship OS RHEL
(Red Hat Enterprise Linux), every so often (as in once in a couple of years)
Red Hat will take a stable Fedora version (as in not leading edge) and
basically badge and support it as RHEL (that's quite an oversimplification
but this is the general idea). Fedora versions come out quite frequently -
as mentioned currently at v14 : RHEL has recently released v6 but CentOS is
at 5.6 (RHEL 5.6 and CentOS 5.6 are widely considered as the norm at the
moment)

The RHEL version is a paid for distro but is based on a full open source
license, Red Hat package some of their own software and branding around it -
the developers of CentOS take that publicly available source code and
effectively rebrand it (removing the frankly unnecessary RH specific stuff).
Software that will run under RHEL is binary compatible with CentOS (at the
same version number).

The issues are the same and the solutions are the same - the price is not
(ie 100% discount)

I'm not a complete Red Hat evangelist - my home desktop system is a
Hackintosh, my laptop is a MacBook Pro & I run Ubuntu on my front room TV
system (with XBMC). I've also got a home brew Linux firewall/Dansguardian
proxy (to protect my family - probably FC4) and an NSLU2 for lightweight
data feeds (running BusyBox)
