Peer-to-peer (P2P) just simply means a network of "peers", ie where all 
connected nodes are equal. This is as opposed to the server-client model 
that is more common on the Internet.

However Steve is is right that most small network systems are p2p - two 
home machines can connect to each other without one of them being "the 
server".

With Skype, the point is that if I call you then the connection is 
essentially between myself and you, and does not go through a central 
Skype server (except presumably for establishing the connection). 
Furthermore I think Skype will route calls between "customers" A and B 
via customers C&D who aren't involved with the call, but still the data 
isn't (for the most part) going via Skype's servers.
