I think these two comments lead you towards your answer.

What do you want to do?

If you just want to make your PC do things automatically that you 
currently do manually, then you want to look a scripting language that 
takes what you know and automates it. Bash scripts, or something like 
Perl/Python, would be good suggestions.

If you want to create an application with a graphical interface, then 
one of the newer languages (C#, Java, etc) will make your life easier.

If you want to create a web application, then PHP, Python, etc would be 
ideal.

I think you need to start with an application you want to create, or at 
least some idea of the type of applications you'd want to create.

All of that said, many of the skills are transferable between languages.
