Phil,

Not sure if this applies to you, but the current version of CUPS, used 
by Ubuntu 9.10, has a bug which can cause problems with printer sharing. 
On my own network, other machines can see the printer, but it doesn't 
respond to print requests. So far I haven't seen any fixes appearing, 
although quite a few people have reported it.
