Hi all,

Feel free to ignore this long email. Biscuits at the next meeting if
anyone reads it all through.

I seem to be fated when it comes to Linux. I don't think it likes me!

You'll recall that I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 on an old Dell
laptop which had Windows 98 on it. Even Tony couldn't install it and
we decided 250Mb RAM was not enough.

So I made a Xubuntu (slim) CD and got disc error !! Too many
variables, I thought. What rotten luck. Can't cope! Can't fight it.

Then I borrowed a Dell laptop with Ubunto 8.10 already installed.

It worked but it wouldn't connect to the Internet or the wifi because
the wireless card is WEP and my hub is WPA. And you really do need to
be connected.

Then I had a bright idea. Use a cable! Bingo. Firefox connects -
though I can't find the home network (where is it?)

So far so good but I can't do much, not even test the Internet
connection because it won't install Flash without the admin password
which the owner has forgotten. Bloody Hell. What is it with me and
Linux? There's a jinx going on here.

So we agreed that I'd fresh install Ubuntu 9.04. Thanks Andy for the
CD. It worked on the Windows 7 laptop (still does) but not ok the
laptop. Odd. It says there is no Media in the drive! So I tried a
music CD. It said a music CD was inserted but showed no tracks and
played nothing. Again, the Windows 7 machine plays it fine!

So do I have a duff CD/DVD drive? It must have worked when 8.10 was
installed!

And what else can go wrong? Shall I just give up? I had great success
with the little eeepc I bought for my granddaughter. On the Internet,
on the network, updated the apps, printed documents, everything.

Sorry to be such a wet blanket but it really is like wading through
treacle. Does anyone have any bright ideas? Is Linux always this hard.
And this is before I try to learn Linux !!

Best wishes and see you at the next meeting,

Brian
