I need to occasionally access a couple of Linux (Ubuntu) machines which
are several hundred miles away. They both sit on the same broadband
router network.

A couple of years ago, before The Enlightenment, these were Windows
machines and could easily be accessed using LogMeIn, which seems to
easily (and worryingly) sail through routers, firewalls and all manner
of security obstructions to allow full access to remote desktops.

However, Linux seems a good deal more secure and LogMeIn have so far not
produced a version that can provide access to Linux desktops.

I've had a look around and can see that it's fairly straightforward to
set up permissions on a remote machine to allow access, using the Remote
Desktop utility. The bit that seems more difficult is at the other end.
Finding an application that can establish the remote connection, find
it's way through a router (which may have a dynamic IP address) and then
connect to the right machine seems tricky.

I suppose that using something like DynDNS would overcome the IP
addressing problem, but as for the rest of the solution, I'm still
scratching my head. Ideally, I'd like to find something with a
straightforward GUI interface, which doesn't require a Phd in
astrophysics to set up.

Has anyone ever set up such a system, and if so, could you give me an
idea of what app to use and how to set it up?
