I've come across similar, if you suspect the access point is at fault,
having done the test mentioned below (or even prior to it), seek out a
firmware upgrade for it

What is the make/model ? - some even have an open source firmware (if you
feel a little brave) : I've done this myself on an old Linksys that had
terrible range problems (it shipped from US where Cisci/Linksys paranoia was
rife at the time), stock firmware and available upgrades did nothing to help
and no facility was there to boost the signal. Tried dd-wrt firmware and
apart from increasing functionality by a factor of about 10 the box is more
responsive/and I've almost double the output signal without any difference
in reliability

Unfortunately the above only works for a limited list of hardware but is
worth a look (as is the openwrt project & similar)

I have seen this before on a couple of windows laptops - turned out to
be the router as it also dropped my EeePC connection. Tried various
levels of security including none at all and it would still at some
point dis-associate from the access point / router. Solution was a new
router.

Might be worth trying it elsewhere eg McDonalds free wi-fi to see if it
does the same there.
