Dear PestList Members, My name is Abdimajiid Yusuf Farah, and I am writing from Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somalia), where I serve as Deputy of the Collection Management Department at the newly established Somaliland National Museum.
Our institution has recently built a collection of over 2,000 ethnographic and archaeological artifacts representing the material culture and history of our region. While this achievement is significant for our community, we are currently facing serious preservation challenges, particularly related to pest infestation and environmental risk factors affecting organic materials such as wood, textiles, leather, and paper-based objects. Due to limited technical capacity and restricted access to conservation resources, we are seeking professional guidance from experienced colleagues in the field of museum integrated pest management (IPM) and preventive conservation. Specifically, we would greatly appreciate advice on: - Practical and low-cost IPM strategies suitable for small or emerging museums. - Monitoring systems (traps, identification methods, documentation templates). - Non-toxic treatment options for active infestations. - Environmental control approaches in low-resource settings. - Recommended training materials, manuals, or online courses. - Potential mentorship or collaborative support opportunities. - Any shared experiences, technical documents, case studies, or recommendations would be immensely valuable to us as we work to safeguard Somaliland’s cultural heritage.
