I've had great success with barrier treatments during peak times of arthropod ingress (spring and fall for us) into my special collections room--it's definitely cut down on the number of potentially harmful pests. This is purely anecdotal, of course, but it's been consistently useful. We do try to hit it before the pollinators are active in the spring, keep the area where it's applied from going into bloom, and use one of the encapsulated treatments so it lasts a bit. As an arboretum with an extensive rare book room, it's often hard to balance the ethical/ecological impacts with the requirements of the special collections, but this has been a consistent benefit for us and I think we're okay.

In spring as it warms up and in the fall as it cools. I do feel like they help at those targeted times of year. Modern pesticides that most companies use are micro encapsulated which allows them to break down slower giving 90 day coverage and also the ability to grip onto surfaces and not get washed away by rain or precipitation this helps prevent migration of product. Anything like Talstar P or Onslaught should show a benefit. They should never be used near flowering plant materials if any bees are feeding at the time of application is really the only precaution which is the responsible thing to do and is on most labels anyways. Also make sure they do not spray close to any HVAC fresh air intakes. You can also do a trial run and see if your pest counts drop before making any long term commitment. Don’t let them pressure you into a contract. Ask them for a discounted trial treatment on a building that you could quantify and judge if it helps.
