Dear Richard and Tony, Thank you so much, that makes sense. There was a small enclosed rodent trap near to where they were found and I thought that I could smell a dead animal so they are going to get that checked out.
Many thanks, Your help is much appreciated, Celia Sent from Outlook for Android<https://aka.ms/AAb9ysg> ________________________________ From: pestlist@googlegroups.com <pestlist@googlegroups.com> on behalf of Dr Tony Irwin <dr.tony.ir...@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, October 27, 2023 5:00:09 pm To: pestlist@googlegroups.com <pestlist@googlegroups.com> Subject: Re: [PestList] Re: Identification help please I would agree that these are Fannia larvae, but they breed in a wide variety of substrates - rotting vegetables, birds' nests, wasps' nests, as well as dung and carrion. They have appeared in large numbers (20 in one day, 19 the next) this week in Oxford in the UK in a corridor of an old building which was converted into an archive space about 15 years ago. The environment where they were found is cool and not controlled. I thought that they omitted a rather unpleasant smell. I have no idea what they are and would be most grateful for some help in identifying them. The rule is in millimetres, they are between 10mm and 15 mm in length. Apologies for the poor images - they were moving when I was trying to photograph them. They are cream/brown/dark brown in colour. One cleaner found one in her hair and thought they could be dropping from beams above. Any expert identification would be much appreciated.
