Hello Mike,

We recently had some freshly harvested wood brought in for an educational
event, albeit on a much smaller scale. Our educators used a smoke treatment on
the wood they were bringing in as a first level effort to remove pests before
the material was brought into our treatment area. After it arrived we still
treated the wood with a freeze treatment, as I would not have been comfortable
with it entering the building with only a smoke treatment. I would feel much
the same about using an insecticidal soap as a treatment solution. I agree that
a heat treatment sounds like it would work for you based on the size of the
objects and your time restrictions.

Best,
Zach Reis

Dear Mike.
Heating would be the best option. It is faster than freezing and does not
require a huge walk-in freezer. There are instructions on CCI web site.

You can make an “oven” using black sheeting and a heat source. I was going
to suggest using the sun as your source, but I see you are in Minneapolis (I
know the weather well being from there)

Insectidical soap can’t hurt, but not sure that it would be adequate. How long
do you have to prepare? You can also isolate (using plastic sheeting, making a
well-sealed bubble. Place sticky traps inside and see what you have. The
temperature that you have to reach is only about 150 deg F which will not melt
the plastic.

Hello all,

We'll be bringing freshly-harvested willow branches into the building for an
installation, and I'm wondering what would be the best method to treat them to
prevent any possible introduction of pests. There are 20 branches, up to 8 feet
long and about an inch in diameter, and stripped of leaves.

Has anyone had a similar experience? We're not sure if we have the time or
capacity for a heat/freeze treatment. Is an insecticidal soap an appropriate
option?

Many thanks for your thoughts and advice!

All the best,
