Dear Mike. Heating would be the best option. It is faster than freezing and does not require a huge walk-in freezer. There are instructions on CCI web site. https://www.canada.ca/en/conservation-institute/services/agents-deterioration/pests.html. You can make an “oven” using black sheeting and a heat source. I was going to suggest using the sun as your source, but I see you are in Minneapolis (I know the weather well being from there)
Insectidical soap can’t hurt, but not sure that it would be adequate. How long do you have to prepare? You can also isolate (using plastic sheeting, making a well-sealed bubble. Place sticky traps inside and see what you have. The temperature that you have to reach is only about 150 deg F which will not melt the plastic. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Hello all, We'll be bringing freshly-harvested willow branches into the building for an installation, and I'm wondering what would be the best method to treat them to prevent any possible introduction of pests. There are 20 branches, up to 8 feet long and about an inch in diameter, and stripped of leaves. Has anyone had a similar experience? We're not sure if we have the time or capacity for a heat/freeze treatment. Is an insecticidal soap an appropriate option? Many thanks for your thoughts and advice!
