Hi Rachel, While they are in the Tineidae family, they're in the Hieroxestinae subfamily which are primarily detritophagous and fungivorous. Some of them facultatively eat plant material-- it doesn't seem like their primary food source is keratin-based. I can look into this for you, it's a very understudied clade, unfortunately!

Now I am nervous because I definitely have wool and feathers in the collections, and these are classified as a clothes moth if I am not mistaken. Thank you Rachel From: pestlist@googlegroups.com <pestlist@googlegroups.com> On Behalf Of Novick, Isabel Sent: Thursday, November 17, 2022 7:24 AM To: pestlist@googlegroups.com Subject: [PestList] Re: Moth Experts please help External Hi Rachel, if you'd be willing to send more pics that would be helpful, but right now it looks to me like the Tineid Oinophila v-flava or the yellow v moth. They eat decaying plant matter, bark, stored food and apparently, wine corks. Do you have anything like that in your collection? They also could have just come in from outside. Can anyone identify them and let me know if I should be concerned? I am in Northern California if that helps with an i.d. They are small - maybe about 7 mm in length. I appreciate your help.
