Alexandra,

Your question is clear and direct. The answer, however, must rely upon the less
direct comment: ‘It depends’. The threshold for action should be based upon the
acceptable level of risk.

If one silverfish was discovered near the Magna Carta, that would likely lead
to immediate and aggressive efforts to investigate, abate the problem, and
ensure that preventative measures were put into action. That same silverfish in
the loading dock of warehouse, however, would be relatively insignificant.

The abundance of any pest should be considered along with the frequency of trap
monitoring. One silverfish captured in the archives after just a day of
monitoring may be far more concerning than 10 silverfish captured during an
interval of six months.

In summary, consider what is an acceptable level of risk, then set goals that
are worthwhile, attainable, sustainable, and measurable.

Subject: [PestList] Monitoring figures
Good afternoon list,

I hope you’re all well.

I am currently writing an IPM instructions document for our institution. One of
the questions that often comes up is at what point do you have enough pests to
qualify for interventive treatment? Whilst attempting to get to zero pests is
lovely I’m not sure that’s something that can be realistically achieved in most
institutions.

So, if for example you have a catch of silverfish in one of your traps, how
many would one catch before saying you have too many and need to put down some
pesticide? 5/10/20? Considering the blunder traps are only a small
representation of floor space in the store if you have say 10 silverfish in the
traps I assume that the amount of silverfish in the store overall is much
greater.

Does anyone have a hard cut off line for what is a reasonable amount of pest
activity or a “manageable” amount? Or if you just have some thoughts on the
topic that would be great!

Thank you so much,

Alexandra Wade
