Ok – sounds like they may have been just hitched a ride in the box. If you do
not have to keep the box don’t. If you have to keep it for context or what-
ever then freeze the box and clean it out the best that you can. Do not freeze
the reverse glass painting.

Good luck.

Gretchen, thanks for that, I would describe the color as tarnished silver. The
contents of the box was a reverse glass painting and it came from a residence
that was described as somewhat dirty.

Thanks for the reply Steph. It was the color of the wings that led me away from
webbing clothes moth. I would describe these moths as grey/brown with an almost
metallic quality. However, given the great variety in the living world there
may be webbing clothes moths that are grey.

Todd, they were in the bubble wrap that was protecting a framed reverse glass
painting. I'm told that the painting had been in the box for some time but that
may be speculation. The owner of the house was deceased and the house was
described as somewhat dirty; dust, cobwebs etc. The packing has been disposed
of and the box and painting are sealed in plastic until I get an idea of what
we are dealing with.

The contents of the box might help point towards/rule out different varieties.
Did the material in the box contain wool/feathers/fur? It definitely does
resemble a webbing clothes moth. Maybe you have already done this, but just to
confirm, hopefully the contents of the box have either been bagged or disposed
of outside the museum building.

Hi Chris,

This definitely looks like a webbing clothes moth to me. I’m no expert, but as

I’ve seen more than my fair share of this particular species. They also have
that characteristic reddish hair tuft, and the light brown/gold-ish wings. The

Hope this helps! Happy Memorial Day Weekend 😊

Hi Chris,

It's difficult to tell from these photos, but, to me, it looks like it might be
a webbing clothes moth. I can't see any specks or spots on the wings that are
more characteristic of casemaking or brown-dotted clothes moths (but that might
just be a result of the lighting/angles in these images). I would defer to the
experts if anyone else has a different ID, but it is definitely a species of
clothes moth.

Best,
Madeline

Subject: [PestList] Moth ID

It's Friday afternoon before Memorial Day weekend so the timing isn't great but
here we go.

I found 3 of these alive in a box that was brought to our museum. 7 mm long. I
was thinking the red tuft of hair on the head, the antennae and the size
pointed to Brown Dotted Clothes Moth. Any confirmation or alternative ID would
be welcome.
