Better yet, DWIM.  If I write

  print "[EMAIL PROTECTED]";

and no array @southern exists, I probably mean I want it to print

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'd say, if the variable exists, interpolate it.  If not, print it as 
it stands.
