Without a doubt, "UML Distilled" is the bible of the genre.
I'll make a pitch, though, for O'Reilly's "UML in a Nutshell", which
I have; it's a decent little tutorial and reference.

UML is extremely useful as a design language.  I wonder, though, how
a distributed collaborative effort can utilize it.  Anyone know of any
open-source web-enabled UML tools?  Or do I gotta write one myself? :-)
