So far so good. On a different box from the one on which I experienced the error, I configured with Perl 5.8.8, in order to get the associated older version of Test::Harness. I called 'make', then 'make test'. As expected, 'make test' failed in the same spot reported earlier. I then applied the patch and called 'make test' again. 'make test' is now underway. I will try the patch on the first machine tonight. Thank you very much. kid51
