There is no need for an ActiveTcl installation for using Tkx with
ActivePerl. A significant subset of the widgets and the core Tcl engine
are bundled in a single library that is included in ActivePerl.

There is a (currently) undocumented mechanism to tell Tkx (actually,
Tcl.pm) to use a local ActiveTcl installation instead of the bundled
library. This should only be necessary if you need to use Tcl code or
widgets not included in ActivePerl, or if you have a later release of
ActiveTcl that may include widget bug fixes not yet released in a new
ActivePerl release.

The 818 release should include a list of all bundled widgets.

One other thing to keep in mind though: PerlApp (in PDK 7.0) will be
able to wrap applications using Tkx, but it will not be able to detect
dependencies on additional Tcl modules. So if you want to easily wrap
your applications in standalone executables, then you may want to
restrict yourself to the "standard" set of widgets.

The informal "rules" for building the bundled widget set have been:

* Need all widget types that PerlTk has support for.
* Obviously everything needed for the PPM GUI application.
* Everything used by the PDK GUI applications, which are also built
  using Tkx.

We think these rules should provide a reasonably comprehensive set of
functionality right out of the box. We are open to suggestions for other
"essential" widget types, but we don't want to bundle the complete Tcl
distribution.

Cheers,
-Jan
