Absolutely. I'm a sysadmin, and have used perl exclusively for all my
scripting work since NT4 days. Back then my reasons for learning was
that it gave me the ability to do powerful API type things
programmatically without recourse to compiled languages, e.g. walking
over the registries of hundreds of machines. My colleagues in Unix admin
took these sort of things for granted using shell scripts (and perl of
course) but the Win32 cmd shell isn't exactly brimming with features.

Even now, with languages like VBScript and JScript sporting a rather
more complete feature set, they don't come close to perl's combination
of ease of use and low level API access (sockets/C modules/etc.), not to
mention support from the community. I've found Win32::Daemon
particularly useful - try writing a full blown service in JScript!

At my last company I wrote a paper and got agreement from management to
make perl the standard for all sysadmin work, and at my new place it's
become more or less de facto for the same reasons. Even group policy
scripts are all written in perl, using the WSH tie ins.

Fantastic, and couldn't do my job without it.

Paul

Subject: General question.

Hello, all!

Is there any serious usage of Perl for Windows?

Here, in Moscow, I know quite few programmers who used to develop using
Perl (under UNIX). And I doubt they still do.

As for me, I find Perl quite handy and useful. And what they've done in
PDK is amazing I guess. But I use it on my own, "for fun". And still I
can't see the place of Perl among the other languages/platforms. Nobody
here can I guess.

So, let us start our little survey, shall we? ;) First question:

Why do YOU use Perl for Windows?

Thanks in advance,
Artem A. Avetisyan.

P.S.
THIS IS NOT A COMMERCIAL ACTION!! I'm just interested ;)
