I use perl for a number of tasks on Windows -- I find it far faster to develop scripts in perl than in some other language like VBScript (actually, for most purposes it also runs faster), and the scripts are generally more versatile. I send myself automated emails based on parsing logs or doing database queries, I rearrange data in excel files, and do daily polls of particular websites of public data and compare it to data in our database. I've also used perlscript for asp pages -- the code is quick and compact.
I have a feeling much of the use of perl is geared towards website management, though. From what I've heard, a large number of e-commerce sites use perl (check perlmonks.com -- there's a thread on this). Interwoven, a major enterprise-level CRM/Workflow app, also uses perl extensively (though I myself haven't worked on Interwoven).
The main thing is that I can develop something in perl in under half an hour that would probably take over an hour, at least, to do in some other language.

Subject: General question.
Hello, all!
Is there any serious usage of Perl for Windows?
Here, in Moscow, I know quite few programmers who used to develop using Perl (under UNIX). And I doubt they still do.
As for me, I find Perl quite handy and useful. And what they've done in PDK is amazing I guess. But I use it on my own, "for fun". And still I can't see the place of Perl among the other languages/platforms. Nobody here can I guess.
So, let us start our little survey, shall we? ;) First question:
Why do YOU use Perl for Windows?
Thanks in advance,
Artem A. Avetisyan.
P.S.
THIS IS NOT A COMMERCIAL ACTION!! I'm just interested ;) _______________________________________________
