Perhaps an analogy would help.
You want to manage how much beer to order. To answer this question,
you need to ask:
1. how much beer do I need?
2. how much beer can I store?
3. how much beer do I want?
4. how much beer could I drink now?
Substitute memory for beer and vmstat free column shows the instantaneous
answer to #4 -- more or less (if you look at it with beer goggles :-).
Methinks
you are asking the wrong question. You may want to ask how much memory
you need? But the answer to that question, thanks to virtual memory,
depends
on the performance you want, not the amount of memory you want. Add
another layer of virtualization and the question becomes even more dependent
on the performance you want, yes?
