certain device detection probing so that the login process can start?

USB storage devices unless one of the devices is required to be
mounted *at boot* or is the boot device itself?
Ah yes, and if the awfull 10 minutes long network timeouts could be
eliminated too it would be great!
We had too many embarassing minutes on the recent linuxtag when people
were observing SXDE waiting for long minutes during the second boot to
understand that network is not there.
