there is no interaction between the localization package of gnome and soffice. The wrong observation was caused by staroffice still running...
The main cause for soffice starting slow seems to be a complete installation of all Solaris localizations on the system. This comes with a lot of fonts being installed under /usr/openwin/lib/locale. I am just trying to uninstall these fonts and look if this improves the situation, but truss shows that all these fonts are being openend. So I am hopeful that this will resolve my issue...
