Hello,

I'm pretty much new to all this so not sure if this is the right place or not,
but here goes:

Every install I've done of either Solaris Express or SXCR xx my box is just
chunky feeling, very slow.

Examples:

I pretty much am always playing mp3's and web surfing at the same time, as I do
other stuff.

Web stuff is either done in mozilla or firefox from Vermillion(JDS) builds.
MP3 either xmms(Blastwave) or Rythmbox(Vermillion)

Pulling up web pages can just be terrible slow and stutter about.
Some times music skipps about or just stops playing for seconds at a time.

Keep in mind I can be doing other stuff too.

Like I've been playing around with pkgsrc building bits of software with either
gcc/studio11 so whilst compiling, things get worst. Now I understand the
concept of workload and all, but.....

Please don't take this as some flaimbait/war because I'm not intending this to
come off like that. Cause I really like Solaris and think it is one of the
best OS's out there, (just has a lot of cool stuff) :)
That being said, when I have Linux/*BSD on here there is none of this sluggish
feeling, and when I run Linux/*BSD I use the beta's of those like
Rawhide(fedora)/ Current (FreeBSD) so I know they have debuging on and that, I
don't think it can just simply be running DEBUG on solaris at the momment.

I am currently on

uname -v
brandz-builds_2006-03-15

$ dmesg | grep -i debug
Apr 19 23:13:39 echelon genunix: [ID 145129 kern.notice] DEBUG enabled

Helpfull to have hardware specs huh?
amd64 3200
1gb RAM (have had 2gb in the past too with the same sluggish feeling)
7200 RPM Sata hd
Nvidia 6800GT (nvidia drivers)
MSI neo2 platinum MOBO (nforce)

I also have a [EMAIL PROTECTED] / 1gb RAM / sata hd's / nvidia mx400 (old) and
I don't really see the same sluggish behavior that I do on the other box, it is
currently running

snv_33 (Solaris Express) + Vermillion 9 (JDS)

The box really moves so sluggish that I really want to put Linux back on here
just to get some sanity back, however, I'm really liking Solaris 10/11ish and
want to keep it on here. So I'm torn :)

Can someone help me learn something about how I can test something to make my
box move/perform better, learn some more internal parts of Solaris in the time
spent on this and just maybe help opensolaris in some way?

I'm not a programmer (trying to learn) but I have been running Linux as my main
OS for the past 7-8 years so I know my way around *nix for the most part, but
not a guru by any means.

Thanks for any helpful feedback and I you want to flaim for bring up the other
OS's I understand :)
