Hi,
Does anyone have a opinion or knows of a report that has done a comparision of the Siemens Fujitsu Sparc V vs. Sun's Ultra Sparc IV+ chips?
Considering an 8cpu V890 and a siemens 8cpu PW650.
server will be used mostly for application server and number crunching
abilities.

Getting usual blogg from both suppliers..

any help or thoughts appriciated

Hardware selection is probably a better topic for another list, but I'm
unsure what that list might be. I can, however, make some suggestions
as to how to pick some benchmarks for evaluation. There are lots of
other reasons to select one piece of gear over another, but since you
posted this to the perf list we'll discuss performance:

Benchmarks in order of preference:

1) Your application(s) loaded the way you're going to use them.
2) Similar large app (eg specjapp server, other large number crunching
   app)
3) Speccpu2000 and other synthetic workloads.

Note that it's important to stress all components of the system
in a similar fashion to your actual load to get a realistic idea
of what you can expect. For example, benchmarks that fit in a
P4 extreme processor's cache may look very impressive, but if your
code bangs on the memory subsystem at all you'll want the Opteron.
The same is true for I/O, networking, FP, etc. - evaluate the
system with a workload representative of your proposed use. If your
code has significant single threaded portions, single-cpu performance
will be more important. If not, aggregate throughput will be more
interesting...

And don't forget:

"The longer a industry standard benchmark has existed, the less
likely that it has useful or meaningful similarity to real-world
applications"
